Job Board
PostDoctoral Position (2 years)
The working group of Prof. Dr. Possner (Cloud Physics in the Climate System) from the Institute of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences, Goethe University Frankfurt am Main searches for a candidate for a position of
Research Assistant (m/f/d)
(PostDoc)
(E 13 TV-G-U)
for a limited period of two years and two months, starting as soon as possible. The salary grade is based on the job characteristics of the collective agreement applicable to Goethe University (TV-G-U).
The goal is to improve the understanding and imaging of secondary ice multiplication in Arctic and Southern Ocean mixed-phase clouds. In this respect, observational data from Arctic and Southern Ocean campaigns will be analyzed with statistical methods and model experiments will be performed in cloud-resolving model simulations. The project is part of the 4-year CleanCloud EU project and runs in close collaboration with several European partners.
We expect a scientific University degree and a PhD degree on the topic of cloud and/or boundary layer processes (or be about to defend it). Previous knowledge in cloud physics, experience in the evaluation of models and/or observations with complex statistical methods (e.g. multivariate relationships, image processing, or artificial intelligence methods) are an advantage. Results are expected to be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presented at international conferences. Additional professional development funds are also available.
We offer you an interesting, diverse and varied field of activity in an open-minded and committed team. We are a family-friendly employer with an attractive collective bargaining agreement (TV-G-U), company pension plan, currently free LandesTicket Hessen and a wide range of continuing education opportunities. The Riedberg campus has excellent transport links. Your workplace is located in a pleasant working atmosphere with all the advantages of a modern university environment.
The Goethe University is committed to a policy of providing equal employment opportunities for both men and women alike, and therefore encourages particularly women to apply for the position/s offered. Individuals with severe disability will be prioritized in case of equal aptitude and ability.

Computational Scientist (Permanent Position)
The Institute for Atmosphere and Environment of the Department of Earth Sciences and Geography at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main is seeking to fill the position of a
Research Associate (m/f/d)
(E 13 TV-G-U)
to be filled. The classification is based on the job characteristics of the collective agreement applicable to Goethe University (TV-G-U).
Today's climate and Earth system models are highly complex, consist of several interactive components and are increasingly being developed not only at operational climate and weather centers, but also as community models by scientists. For cross-scale applications from large-eddy simulations (LES) to coupled long-term paleoclimate simulations, model development and ensuring the compatibility of different model versions on high-performance computers, we are looking for permanent support from a computational scientist.
You should already have many years of experience in the field of climate/earth system sciences. The specific requirements for this position are
-
completed scientific university studies (MSc/Diploma) in meteorology or related disciplines
-
several years of experience in scientific programming (Fortran, Python, NetCDF, Shell)
-
several years of experience in working on high-performance computers (massively parallel, distributed memory, vector computing)
-
several years of experience in model development with version documentation of at least one published model code (Git, subversions)
-
writing of publishable code documentation
-
experience in the supervision of doctoral candidates and students
-
at least 10 publications in scientific journals including at least one technical publication (e.g. technical note)
-
project work in/with German and international institutions
-
teaching contributions in German and English on programming and modeling in climate and/or earth system sciences over a period of several years
-
qualification in higher education didactics; in the absence of a certificate: development of a teaching portfolio and obligation to acquire the higher education didactics certificate within two years of employment
We offer you an interesting, diverse and varied area of responsibility in an open-minded and committed team. As a Computational Scientist, you will be involved in active research projects of the working groups “Mesoscale Meteorology and Climate” and “Cloud Physics in the Climate System” and help to shape them.
The position also includes the sustainable support of teaching on Earth system modeling to the extent of two course hours (LVS). The post holder is therefore obliged to take part in regular further training in higher education didactics and to participate in projects for the further development of studies and teaching at institute, department level as well as at central level.
We are a family-friendly employer with an attractive collective wage agreement (TV-G-U), company pension scheme, currently free LandesTicket Hessen and a wide range of further training opportunities. The Riedberg campus has excellent transport connections. Your workplace is located in a pleasant working atmosphere with all the advantages of a modern university environment.
Goethe University aims to increase the proportion of women and particularly encourages women to apply. If equally qualified, severely handicapped persons are given preference.
